Well I took a walk yesterday, temperatures are beginning to climb a bit and it felt good to head downtown and get some fresh air. It turned out to be colder that I wanted it to be as well as being slightly short on time, But I was able to still make a few images that I liked and at the very least, I got to watch the sun set over the Charles River. Get out there and enjoy the upward climbing temps and don't throw all your icy snowbanks into the streets...

Every now and then you get lucky...A photo pass for Phish dropped into my lap last week for their fall tour closing show in New Hampshire. Since shooting for the first time, I have always wanted to get the opportunity to shoot this band, and after close to 8 years of waiting, it happened. I've always admired the work of Danny Clinch, Jay Blakesberg, Herb Greene, and Jim Marshall, and shooting one Phish show obviously doesn't put me in the ring with them, but getting to goals in your life sure does feel good. A big thanks to Justin Ward over at www.livemusicblog.com for coming through with the pass, and head over to see a larger selection of pictures from this show.

Custom Guitar

I was recently asked if I could photograph a friend of mines new custom guitar. Nothing special just come down and make some pictures before the show. Well this is what came of it. The guitar is beautiful and the tone of the wood is even more striking in person. The guitar was built by Sean Loughney who works out of Dunore, Pennsyvania. He was kind enough to put a few of my images up on hiw website, so stop by yo have a look.

The Disco Biscuits came back to town this past weekend, and after their shortened stay last March, they had some ground to cover. With an epic light rig, it was like throwing darts at a bulls-eye the size of a mattress trying to get good shots. I put this little number together as I thought it had a nice feeling, a small mini story inside of the evening. It's also pretty rare to get 3 shots in focus and of the same exposure when dealing with live shows as is always the case, when your just ready to make two and three, lights change, someone gets in your way, a lame security guard tells you to scram...

Anyway...I may post more from this evening, or I may just throw them all up over at my flicker account which you can check them out there. Or head over to www.livemusicblog.com for the full gallery. Two weekends ago we traveled down into the mountains of Central Pennsylvania to visit my family at our cottage. It really is the kind of place where the phrase "eat, drink, and be merry" holds true. It happened to be raining on the one morning we had to go out and make some pictures, so we made the best of it, and took to the inside. It's funny how the mood of the day always seems to effect the way that you shoot and mood the eventually comes out in the images. I feel like these look like a rainy day.

The rain did eventually let us and we were able to go out and explore a bit as well as head up to the lake where the fog and mist were hanging heavy. I'll be putting those up shortly, but for now enjoy!

I had the wonderful opportunity to shoot Sound Tribe Sector 9 at the Bank of America Pavilion last Friday night. This is the second show I have shot recently, and like riding a bike, it all comes back to you. Being apart of the energy of live music has always been one of the main reasons I like to shoot it. You get to see the entire crowd, what kinds of werid things people are doing, and also a front row seat for atleast 15 min. There was no shortage of energy on this night and already I am looking forward to shooting more and more music...so as always, stay tuned!

A long over due post...these were taken at the House of Blues in Boston back on March 19, 2010. Again this was my first time back shooting in a live music atmosphere and it was a blast. Unfortunately the Biscuits set from this night was cut short due to "circumstances beyond the band's control." It ended up a really unfortunate circumstance for the band and audience alike. Fortunately for me though, I was still able to make some good pictures throughout the night and look forward to the next opportunity I have.

I had the good fortune to shoot a friends band, The Indobox, last Friday night at the House of Blues in Boston. I haven't shot a show in years and it was great to get back to doing it, especially during a somewhat chaotic and strange night...

The last show I shot, again was years ago, so at the time I was still shooting film and doing my own processing. which was a main reason I stopped doing shows. The overhead cost of all the post work, was the main reason I stopped doing shows. But here we are in the digital age, and it was never more fun or easy than this time around. Getting back into the pit and being right up front, feeding off of the band's energy in front of you, and the crowds energy directly behind, that excitment is what I always loved about concert photography. For being a little rusty, I feel like I got some good images out of this, and it has only made me want to shoot more shows.

Well we are finally having some warm weather here in Boston, so I took the opportunity a few days ago to make some quick, simple pictures in and around our home. The front and back doors were open, Spring breezes were blowing through our apartment, removing the winter and bringing with it freshness. We aren't out of the woods yet, but its coming! Here are two more images from our time spent in Marblehead, MA a few weeks back. It really was a beautiful rocky beach that we stumbled upon, and unfortunately it was far to cold to hang out for very long, especially with a 4x5 and a metal tripod that became a freezing stinging cold metal tripod within moments.

The quiet and at the same time the sound of the ocean gently rolling in at low tide was very calming. More time should be spent on a beach where, in a few hours, would be once again covered my the mother ocean when the tide rolls in.

Who doesn't love looking at contact sheets. They are always kept so secret, with only final images ever making it to the surface. Then inevitably after years, you see a famous photographers contact sheets come to light, and I have always found it to be illuminating to see the process and the searching that it took to make that final image.

This contact sheet comes from a time I was shooting water alot, and there isn't really even a final image on here anywhere, I don't think, but as a whole I think this sheet looks good together. Some water to ponder on a Sunday while you relax. So relax, and ponder, cookies, or water, or poodles, or whatever you like...enjoy!

After three days of good music, and even better friends, we have made our way back to our comfortable warm Boston home. Always nice to return after living out of bags and on couches for three days.

I've put up these two images because, well, it snowed for the first time this season, so why not throw up a few from Florida, last spring. And I just don't have many pictures of snow. A little irony never hurt anyone...

A few images from my trip to Knobels Amusement Park, in Elysburg, PA. I have never been here in the fall, when the rides are closed and kids are missing. Made for an obviously subdued atmosphere, considering any day of the week in the summer this place is packed with children and families. I will be posting more up from this location soon

The last for now from this Centralia series. I have some other new work that will be coming up probably after the thanksgiving holiday. Some color work, maybe a few surprises, probably not...

After this trip to this all to strange town, I am endlessly fascinated by it. I plan on visiting here a few more times before the end of the year, and will be keeping tabs on the town progress. 2016 marks the towns centennial year, and one thing we saw while here, was a vault that is to be opened in 2016, so i'll see you all there!

One of my favorite images I made in Centralia. This was literally one of I think two remaining street signs in the town. Very old remnants of a time gone by. The only reason that it still stood was because about 20 yards up this "street" was one of the few remaining houses. a strange artifact...

Three more from the trip through Centralia, PA. This town had such a sense of loss and memory, you could feel it everywhere you walked. It's not very often you are in a town any more where there is really no possibility of future, everything is in its past and will stay there.

I will be doing some more scanning this weekend of the color work from this trip, keep a look out for that. Im not sure the color work will carry the same emotions that these black and white images do, but who knows what little surprises are out there...Have a good weekend everyone!

Centralia

Downtown Centralia, PA circa 1962 (above)

Here is a better look at what Centralia, PA looks like today. Where this is, is looking back down toward what was the town, from atop a scrap coal hill. The smoke you see coming out of the ground is not steam, but actually smoke from the fire that still burns underground today. There were many holes like these throughout the "town", they actually helped out our hands on this chilly day...

To my knowledge, there are only about 6 residents still living in the town, one of the few remaining houses can be seen in the distance of my photograph. A majority of the families were asked to leave through the mid 1980's due to health and safety concerns, by 1997 there were only around 44 residents in the town.

A Few New

As promised, here is a sampling of some of the new images I made throughout my rip to Pennsylvania last week. A majority of the scanning is now done so over the next few days/week, i'll be posting more substantial groups of images from the different place we got to visit and shoot at.

These three images come from three different stops along our trip. The top image is from an old church in the country near my home town of Shamokin. A very old church that, to my knowledge, doesn't get used that much anymore, my Great Grandmother went there. Next is from the old mining town of Centralia, PA. It is an abandoned mining town whose residents were literally forced to move due to an underground fire burning for some 40 years now, more on this very weird place later. And lastly, from Knobels Amusement park. It is a free admission theme park near my hometown, so in the fall, when the park goes to sleep, you can still get in and have a walk about, quite strange.

All of these places Are within 15min of the house I grew up in, and I had never been to any of them with my camera after all this time. It was great to finally get to these places and explore them. A friend of mine just reminded me of what an old friend used to say about shooting, and I think it fits here. "If you don't know what to shoot, shoot in your back yard" T.Petit

It's been 10 days since i've been back at my home base...My best girl and I traveled back to Pennsylvania for 10 days of visiting family, seeing some great music, re-connecting with friends, and also shooting lots of new images. I will have much to post over the next week once I get the film processed and scanned.

This image was taken a few weeks back while at the Topsfield fair. It has nothing to do with the fair but every now and then a picture of clouds makes me feel quite right. This one did, so I thought I'd share. Stay tuned to this blog and Kelly's Blog for lots of new images!

From Robert Frank's "The Americans" This piece of writing always charged me up the first time I saw it back in school. Not only did I become an instant fan of Jack Kerouac from this piece, but it always made me realize that there is more than one way to experience photographs. That you can actually FEEL a photograph, and not just look at it, talk about it, theorize about it.

Frank's "The Americans" is on tour right now and is at the Met in NYC until January 2010. I know I will be making the trip down to the city for it. I have never seen any of Frank's work in person, and I hope that same "crazy feeling" bubbles right up in me...

I had the chance to revisit my negative from Maine over the past two days. In them I found some more images that I had overlooked before. Some of these images I am scanning purely for stock reasons, but some also hold some weight with the others that have already been posted on here through the months.

The simplicity and calmness of this image are what I like. It also speaks alot about how the camp felt on a day to day basis. This image was taken right before dinner, as you can vaguely see Eric, the owner, on his way back from the pantry playing with his old dog Kita in the background.

Here's a few more images from my time spent in Maine a few years back. It was 3 years ago this month that I was there and, as the weather gets cooler here, it reminds me of the 30 degree mornings, wood stove fires for warmth every morning, and the rapidly changing leaves. Fall is certainly approaching us, so here is a bit of fall color for my first post in awhile. As with every change in season, I'm sad to see summer go, but I always welcome fall...

Inspiration

Two nights ago, I was in the darkroom again for the first time in quite awhile. Too long in fact. I was making a print for another photographer, and having to recall old skills and tricks to not only make the print breathe, but also to make it breathe the way he wanted it to, was harder then I remember. But like a bicycle, it all came back to me and soon enough we had our print, both he and I satisfied.

I was thinking on the way home from the printing, about printing and what and why I love it so much. Too much to list here, but I have posted three images from photographer Aaron Siskind, who was a early inspiration to me. I had seen a show of his work in Boston, without knowing who he was or what kind of work he made. The images resonated with me and to this day I can remember thinking in the gallery, that I wanted to make pictures that looked like this.

At the time I was in my second year of photo school and still trying to figure a lot of things out. Seeing these images not only gave me a frame of reference for what a picture could look like, but it also freed my mind up about what a picture can be. It can be simple and still convey emotions and feelings as good as any poem or portrait or great piece of music. I think over the next few days I will post more of my printing and photo hero's, it will be a good way for me to remember why all of this is so damn important to me anyway!

Well it's been an unexpectedly fun and busy week, so I haven't gotten around to posting up any new work, but the wait is over! More images from the Hampton beach trip. As I look at these, I am happy with the outcome and am surpriced to have so many images that I like from just one outing. Really makes me want to plan more time fr myself to devout to shooting new work. I will be going out with a camera over the next few weeks, and possibly getting back to some large format Black and White picture making...as always stay tuned and keep having fun!

A few more images from the Hampton Beach trip two weeks ago. This place was filled with so much character the images practically landed in your lap. This work is guided by my love of photographers such as Stephen Shore, William Eggleston, and many others who were able to turn very ordinary, mundane objects, into beautiful ones. Hopefully I have been able to carry on that tradition as well as keeping a subtle level of humor in my work.

My best girl and I recently traveled to the lovely town of Hampton Beach, NH for some shooting and laughs. We both returned with a great number of images and I will be sharing mine over the next few days/weeks.

Its the first time in awhile that I pushed any 35mm film through my camera and I have to say it went great! I will be shooting more with it and hope to have more to share soon! Stay tuned for more images from this series.

Here is an image from an older series of work of mine "Textures." I have been very much wanting to get back out and work in this style again. It is quiet and calming and somewhat like a meditation when I would be out working and looking for these images.

This image was the first time I really pulled back and viewed the whole scene instead of focusing on a detail. I will post more until I get some newer work scanned and put online! Enjoy and relax.

I just recently became a member of Glasshouse Images Stock portfolio. I had been submitting groups of images to these folks for a few months now, and after a long trial period, they have accepted 10 of my images. I hope to submit and have a much larger portfolio with them over time, but for now im just excited!

Glasshouse Images is a stock photography website based in NYC that has a slight bend toward the more artistic. Another image tells a story

I knew about this but forgot...Nancy over at "Every Photo Tells a Story" blog, posted up another one of my images a few weeks back. Check out the comments section to see folks ideas and stories about what they get from the image.

This is once again a very funny thing to see, because, like my other image on her blog, I know what was going on when I took the photograph and how I was feeling about it. Some people share some of the same feelings but most are new takes on it. I typically don't put a lot of fore thought into images as I am making them, trying to stay open to any number of feelings and images. Shoot first think later. So being much later I enjoy reading people's responses, and re-thinking about the image I made almost 3 years ago now...

New work

Well I have continued to keep shooting, which I am very happy about. Last Saturday I was lucky to be apart of one of those days were a storm clears, the sun comes out and is low in the sky, which makes everything shimmer with light. I was standing on my porch and looked all around me and realized that I had to take pictures. It's always nice when the scene around you forces you to take pictures, instead of using other motivations.

Hopefully this feeling translates here. There are others from this moment in time of shooting that I will be posting soon. I also have a topic in mind that I hope will start an ongoing discussion on this blog, but more on that later.

Just wait for the storm to clear...
